The Accident | Part 2 of 4
“I already signed up for the Philippines program. Our family and friends know we are leaving. We can’t cancel,” I said. He looked surprised which made me more upset. As if he thought I was saying something new that he had never heard. He said, “I’m sorry but they are going to let you postpone, don’t worry about that. Just tell them your husband can’t leave because of his job. If they can’t understand that then that’s their fault. That may not be the place for you if they can’t be flexible with that.”
Calling it a little trip is so annoying. Especially since he knows why we are going. We planned this together. Now I feel abandoned with our dream sitting in my lap.
“Wow, so all you needed was your job to offer you a little more to abandon me?” I said with tears in my eyes. Running out of words to say, I went to the kitchen to make tea. I could hear him following behind me as I grabbed my favorite green mug out of the dishwasher.
“I’m always with you. I sat in the hospital with you for days not knowing if you would come home again. Don’t question me on that. You want me to let this great opportunity go!?! I will!….but I was happy for us. Let’s get that clear!” He yelled as he walked to the bedroom and closed the door.
What if I don’t pass the entry test in the spring for the Philippines program? I thought as I walked into the bedroom to change for bed after finishing my tea. When I walked out of the closet he was already in the bed with the lights off.
I laid down next to him and said, “hey, let’s just see how it all goes. We don’t need to be upset about things right now. Anything is possible at this point.” He sat up to give me a kiss and rolled back over to sleep.
….
The next morning, I got out of bed and my husband was still sleeping. I turned on the television to watch the local weather forecast. The next story said, “The Central Philippines hit by a powerful Typhoon. More than a million fled away from coastal areas and landslide-prone villages. At least thirty people lost their lives in the typhoon. Thousands of homes have been flattened.”
In shock, I laid on the bed in silence until my husband woke up. When he got up to go to the bathroom I said, “You are not going to believe this.” He stepped out and said, “What? What’s up?” I didn’t want to tell him but I would be annoyed if he found out later and felt as if he was breaking the news to me. “There was a typhoon in the Philippines. It was deadly and flattened homes,” I said. “What?!?! When did that happen?” he said as he sat next to me on the bed.
