How To Make Time for Meditation – For the Holiday Season
This week officially marks the beginning of my family’s holiday season.
We use this time to focus on appreciating each other and celebrating our blessings.
Shifting out of the normal routine has put a strain on my meditation practice in the past. By recognizing what throws me off; I have come up with a new approach for this year.
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10
My Approach:
Travel
It’s difficult for me to get still in a different environment. Bringing along my favorite candle or the throw I use will help me settle quicker; increasing my chances of having a deeper meditation session.
Visitors
Hosting guests at home usually interrupts my regular schedule. By staying in the bed a little longer in the morning to meditate, I can continue with the day without attempting to remember to fit the time in.
Family Schedule Change
Both of my children will be home for school break and my husband will have more of a flexible schedule. I made sure that everyone is aware of my meditation practice in an effort to invite them to practice with me if they would like to.
Stress
Preparing to close out the year comes with a lot of stress that needs to be supported by short meditation moments throughout the day too. Over the years, I have been able to recognize the change in myself quick enough to pause and reset.
Anytime during the day, to reset I:
- Pause
- Inhale through my nose
- Hold for 2 or 3 seconds
- Exhale through my mouth
Repeating this sequence three times helps reduce the stressful feelings.
Starting your meditation practice all over again after the holidays is a tougher challenge compared to making these minor adjustments to make time for self-care. Imagine how great you’ll feel next year.
