How To Enhance Your Teen’s Self Care Routine
The images our teens are exposed to are confusing.
Like most teenage girls, my daughter is creating her own definition of beauty.
During one of our visits to my parents house, she spent a lot of time going through the multiple bins of products. My mom always collected different self care products and stored them in baskets. However, this was the first time my daughter cared anything about them.
So when we got home, we decided she was ready to build up her self care area in her bathroom a little more. Now that she is old enough to practice a self care routine on her own, I want to give her the same space dedicated to self care products that I had growing up.
Why Teens Need To Own Their Self Care Routines
Routines that my mom established early on in my life have definitely stayed with me. I put my own twist on things, such as hair care because I let my chemically relaxed hair grow out and opted for the natural. The foundation of the practices have stayed, such as weekly deep conditioning.
Adolescents’ ability to cope with increasing responsibility is often enhanced by the parents’ willingness to support them as they face new challenges. By involving teens as full participants in their self-care, they’re more likely to choose healthy behaviors throughout their lives.
Getting Started
The main focus was to create a self care practice that she can do on her own. No more waiting on me to help with at home spa time. Now it is time for her to own her own practice without dependencies. Here’s what we started her collection off with :
Four large baskets:
Hair:
Shampoo & Conditioner
Coconut Oil
Leave in Conditioner
Deep Conditioner
Lips:
Lip gloss
Carmex
Lip scrubs
Face:
Face mask
Face lotion
Face wash
Body:
Lightly scented soap
Exfoliating brush
Shaving products
Body gel/oil
Body Spray
Lightly Scented Lotion
Routine
To enforce consistency, we started this weekly routine called Self Care Saturday. It involves blocking out the world for a few hours in the evening on Saturdays for face masks, lip scrubs, exfoliating, shaving, etc.
Now that my daughter has her own self care collection to build from, she can start to do these routines on her own. Hopefully, she will put her own twist on them to represent her unique self image. Instead of conforming to the images she sees, this space allows her to create her own definition of her beauty.
Do you have self care routines from your teenage years? Share them. It might help them sort through their self image confusion.
